President Joe Biden bestowed the highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom, upon George Romney, a former Michigan governor and Housing and Urban Development secretary during Richard Nixon's administration.

President Joe Biden awarded the Medal of Freedom to George Romney , the late governor of Michigan and secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Nixon administration. Romney's son, former Sen. Mitt Romney, accepted the award on his father's behalf during a ceremony at the White House Saturday.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor and is given by presidents to those who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors, according to a White House release. Before he won three back-to-back two-year terms as the Republican governor of Michigan, George Romney was the chairman and president of American Motors Corporation.
