US calls on Taliban to 'immediately release' Mark Frerichs – a US Navy civil engineer who was abducted in 2020 – before Afghanistan's new rulers 'expect any consideration of aspirations for legitimacy'
US will not consider Afghan Taliban's"aspirations for legitimacy" until the last American hostage is released, President Biden says.
Sunday's announcement came on the eve of the two-year anniversary of the kidnapping of Mark Frerichs, a US Navy veteran who had spent a decade in Afghanistan working as a civil engineer. Washington has repeatedly told the Taliban it will have to "earn" legitimacy before being recognised by the international community.
