The Biden administration argues that maintaining the pace of liquefied natural gas exports, despite the US becoming the world's largest exporter, would negatively impact Americans by increasing costs, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and polluting vulnerable communities. A recent study commissioned by President Biden analyzes the economic, national security, and climate effects of approving new natural gas export terminals, facing opposition from industry and Republican lawmakers.
The Biden administration claims that continuing to export liquified natural gas as the world’s largest exporter would increase costs for Americans, increase greenhouse gas emissions and pollute struggling communities in a study set to release in the coming days.
“We had the jump, obviously, with the invasion in Ukraine,” said Ed Hirs, an energy fellow at the University of Houston. “But that was just a reordering of supply contracts and trying, trying to get supplies across to Europe and we did that, and then the price returned to normal as production increased.”
The study found the lower supply of natural gas available in the U.S. would raise costs for American households by more than $100 a year by 2050 and could also cause the cost of electricity to rise as more plants burn natural gas to produce power. It would also increase the cost for goods if manufacturers have higher energy expenses and pass those onto consumers, Granholm wrote.
“The stance of the administration was, ‘we're not going to do anything that enables further production and consumption of fossil fuels.’ That's just so misguided,” Hirs said. “The only way we're going to reduce the carbon footprint in the United States is to pursue carbon capture, to pursue lower carbon fuels, to pursue what we now call nature-based solutions.”
