San Jose police arrested a driver on suspicion of hit and run following a collision that left a bicyclist dead, the department said.

The deadly crash happened at about 9:37 a.m. in the area of North Capitol and Gay avenues. Police said the adult male bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver tried to get away but crashed into a light pole a quarter-mile away.
"The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene, but the vehicle was located nearby after becoming disabled," San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said. "Officers were able to take the suspect into custody and also later determined that the vehicle was reported stolen. " The driver was booked into jail for multiple crimes, including vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, police said.
Northbound lanes of North Capitol Avenue were closed between Madden Avenue and McKee Road as investigators processed the scene. Police said the closures were expected to remain in place for several hours.
