SAN ANTONIO - A 52-year-old man was shot and killed early July 16 after San Antonio police said he pointed a firearm toward officers during a chase that began with an attempted stop of a bicyclist. The officer-involved shooting happened at about 2:18 a.m. in the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, according to preliminary information from the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said officers tried to stop a person riding a bicycle, but the individual ignored them and fled. Officers chased the suspect and made contact with him in the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, where police said the suspect pulled out a firearm and pointed it in the direction of officers. Four officers fired several shots, striking the suspect, police said. Officers then attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect, identified as Andrew Davila Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved were identified as Officer Felix Rodriguez, who has two years of service; Officer Thomas Smith, who has 20 years of service; Officer Kenneth Hernandez, who has under two years of service; and Officer Reed Butler, who has under nine years of service. Police said all four have been placed on administrative duty until further notice. The SAPD Shooting Team and the department’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate but concurrent investigations.

Police said their findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review. Bexar County deputies say they dismantled a crew tied to a violent San Antonio home invasion. A pawned thermal optic cracked the case, leading to warrants, arrests, and seizures of drugs, stolen guns, and theft gear.
