A bible study instructor is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a child at a Providence Township church.
Michael Hess , 49, of Quarryville is accused of inappropriately touching a girl while he was an Awana bible class leader at the New Providence Church of God, located on 269 Cinder Road, according to charging documents.
The assaults happened during the victim's weekly Awana bible study classes, she said. There, Hess would allegedly have the child sit on his lap while he helped teach the class. He would touch her inappropriately under her pants, the victim told troopers. Troopers interviewed Hess on Wednesday, where he admitted to intentionally seating the victim close to him in church where she was out of the view from others so that he could put his hand down the child's pants, police reported in charging documents. He said that the entire bible study class and all church leaders would also be sitting in the church pew.
