A peaceful youth protest on June 16 1976, against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools, turned into a massacre when apartheid police opened fire.South Africa faces enormous problems and challenges that are diverse, complex and oppositional. Under these circumstances, public leaders must act with clarity and visionary commitment for the rest of society to remain hopeful.
It is for this reason, among others, that I believe progressive and peace-loving South Africans must make it their duty to partake in key matters pertaining to public education in our democracy. The education of our children is too important to be left in the hands of the political elites and government employees alone.
