For the first time in three years, the Oscars opened with a host–in this case, three, with Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall starting the telecast off with jokes poking fun at the fact that most people are not actually going to the movies

After Ms. Hall and Ms. Sykes described how proud they were to be representing black women, Ms. Schumer added, “And I am representing unbearable white women who call the cops when you get a little too loud.” The show opened with a performance by Beyoncé in a sea of tennis-ball green at the tennis courts in Compton, Calif., a nod to where Venus and Serena Williams got their start. Beyoncé was nominated for best song for “King Richard,” the biopic about the father of the tennis greats, Richard Williams.“It’s been three years with no hosts–we don’t want anybody to go home or have to flinch in their chair,” Ms. Hall told E! before the show.
