With 'Cowboy Carter', Beyoncé joins a growing list of Black country and Americana artists from Texas that includes NOIVAS, Kam Franklin and Rodell Duff.
Soon after Beyoncé shook the world, again, with the surprise release of country songs 'Texas Hold 'Em' and '16 Carriages,' Texas singer NOIVAS made a succinct online post: 'Make country music Black again.' The Jasper native, whose own blend of sounds includes country, meant it as a reclamation of the genre that originated with Black musicians but has since been largely associated with white performers.
who competed on Season 23 of 'The Voice,' remains unfazed and is among a thriving group of Black country artists with Texas roots. Beyoncé's own commitment to the genre has only inspired him further. His single 'West Coast' is a 'love letter to country/western' music and precedes a full-length album, 'Cowboy Soul,' that he says has been 'brewing' for two decades.
