As Fiesta San Antonio brings crowds downtown and takes over parking spaces, judges do what they do every year: Bow to reality and postpone jury trials, which require hundreds of people to show up daily.
Central Jury Bailiff Julieta Schulze and Samantha Zapata, her assistant, enter the Central Jury Room in this file photo. Hundreds of prospective jurors are called each day -- but not during Fiesta.Judges still hold hearings, lawyers confer and offices are open, but the Bexar County Courthouse gets a lot quieter when Fiesta swirls outside.
Once they start again, “I anticipate that week to be very busy,” Central Jury Bailiff Julieta Schulze said. Like a lot of courthouses across the country, no jury panels are called the week of Thanksgiving or the last two weeks of December, either. But Fiesta makes San Antonio different. Normally, Schulze sends out 1,500 jury summons each Monday through Thursday, hoping for 550 to 600 people to appear each day once the exemptions and excuses kick in.
