An inmate being booked into the Bexar County Jail Sunday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while he was being strip searched.
A man killed himself during a strip search Sunday afternoon at the Bexar County Jail. The man, 19, who was not immediately identified, was arrested by San Antonio police in connection with a domestic violence incident involving choking before noon Sunday. Around noon at the jail, the arresting officers were filling out paperwork as a jail deputy took the man to be strip searched in accordance with jail policy for inmates who are accused of a felony offense, Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
Each moment was captured by jail security cameras as he began making his way through the booking process. Throughout the process, the man was quiet and obeying commands from deputies and officers, according to Salazar who reviewed the footage himself. He said there was no indication from the man's demeanor that he was about to kill himself.
