County Commissioners Justin Rodriguez and Grant Moody sought to reduce elected officials' pay raises to match increases for county staff

Bexar County Commissioners Court said no thanks this week to a proposed 5% pay raise, opting instead for the 3% increase that county employees are expected to receive. But the five members of the court will remain among the highest paid at the Bexar County Courthouse. A 3% raise for the new fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1, would raise the four commissioners' pay to $161,762 and boost County Judge Peter Sakai ’s salary from $198,920 to $204.888.

'“I just don’t think it’s right and fair that elected get more than what the rank-and-file get.' The pay hikes will be included in the county's $2.8 billion budget for 2025, which commissioners court will adopt next month. In addition to approving the county's annual budget, the court also sets the property tax rate for the county and University Health, and it oversees the building and maintenance of county roads, drainage projects, parks and county facilities.
