Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores revealed her colon cancer diagnosis and commitment to preventative health access.
Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores announced Tuesday that she's undergoing treatment for colon cancer . Clay-Flores said that after months of feeling unwell, doctor appointments and labs, she was diagnosed before the start of early voting for the Nov. 5, 2024 election. While I kept smiling for pictures on social media and working with constituents, at the forefront of my mind was the fact that not only did I have a large tumor in my colon, but it was bleeding, the Democrat said.
Clay-Flores, whose Precinct 1 sweeps from the county's South to Far West sides, described campaigning in the last grueling weeks of her general-election campaign against Republican challenger Lina Prado. The commissioner won the November race with 63% of the vote, and was sworn in last week to her second four-year term. She said she underwent a six-hour surgery and spent five days recovering at Bexar County-owned University Hospital, and that the experience reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for preventative health access. When I asked my GI doc if I had any risk factors, he said only your race, Clay-Flores said. So if you're in your 40s and Black, you have a high risk. Please call right now to make an appointment with your doctor to schedule your colonoscopy
