The UK's wet summer has created ideal conditions for false widow spiders, which start migrating indoors from mid-August.
If you despise arachnids you'll be horrified to learn it's currently spider season in the UK. Every year, spiders start to migrate indoors in late mid-to-late August, with numbers peaking in our homes in September.
But this year the spider population is not only set to rise, but our eight-legged lodgers will increase in size at the same time. Their venom causes swelling similar to painful burns and brings on a fever. But the silver lining is, thankfully, their bite isn't fatal. The Wildlife Trust confirmed: ‘Cases of false widow bites are rare. Only the two larger species of false widow, the cupboard spider and the noble false widow, are likely to be able to bite through human skin at all.
How to keep spiders out of your home The advice is to seal or patch up windows or install screens for the entire breeding period so you don’t get these spiders infiltrating your home.Strong smells are a natural way to deter spiders from entering your home, according to Pest UK. Spiders are generally repelled by strong citrus aromas as well as eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil.
