Lauren Betts exploded for a career-high 33 points, Kiki Rice added 19, and No. 1 UCLA continued its dominant season with an 82-67 victory over No. 8 Maryland on Sunday. The Bruins (20-0, 8-0 Big Ten ) extended their winning streak to 19 games, all by double digits. Saylor Poffenbarger led the Terrapins (16-4, 6-3) with 18 points, but Maryland has now dropped three consecutive games.
The Terps were missing their second-leading scorer, Shyanne Sellers, who sat out for the second straight game due to a knee injury. The 6-foot-7 junior tallied 14 points in the opening quarter and 24 by halftime. She surpassed her previous career high of 31 points with two free throws remaining with 4:31 on the clock. Betts shot an astounding 14 of 15 from the field, a school-record 93.3% with a minimum of 15 attempts, breaking Denise Curry's 1979 record of 88.9% against LSU. She also contributed seven rebounds and four blocked shots. A key moment arrived in the second half when Betts made a layup and Gabriela Jaquez finished a fastbreak on UCLA's first two possessions, extending the lead to 43-34. Maryland called a timeout, but the Bruins' lead never dipped below seven points for the remainder of the game. UCLA's ball movement was exceptional, racking up 22 assists on 30 field goals, while Maryland matched a season low with seven assists on 25 field goals.Up next, UCLA takes a week off before hosting Minnesota on February 2nd.
