BetterCallSaul star Rhea Seehorn says Kim Wexler has a 'God complex' in Season 6. 'If you think you know Kim, you don't know all of Kim.'
Better Call Saul star, Rhea Seehorn, discusses Kim Wexler’s ever-evolving God complex in the show’s sixth and final season. Developed by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the Breaking Bad prequel follows Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill before he became Saul Goodman, the attorney who would represent Walter White, a.k.a. “Heisenberg.” As Jimmy struggles to resist his scam artist tendencies, Better Call Saul explores the effect he has on those around him.
The juxtaposition of Kim and Jimmy has been a driving force of Better Call Saul. Studious, talented, and seemingly altruistic, Kim has served as Jimmy’s anchor — a do-gooder drawn to Jimmy’s rebelliousness, who would be better off without him. At least that’s what the brush strokes have led audiences to believe. In season 5, Kim was ingratiated deeper into Jimmy’s dealings with Lalo Salamanca, and, surprisingly, she seemed at home in New Mexico's underworld.
“If you think you know Kim, you don't know all of Kim. But probably the even harder thing to wrestle with is holding opposing thoughts about a person in your head at one time. She is everything you thought. It isn't just the side of Robin Hood do-gooding always, either, which I think people would like to assign her shenanigans to. There's quite a bit of ego and quite a bit of God complex happening.
Considering how the audience has viewed her Better Call Saul character for seasons, Seehorn’s comments are both intriguing and understandable. Kim has always tried to do the right thing, and therefore, there’s never been a reason to question her integrity or ego. She then began to do the wrong thing, remained calm, and readily justified it — which gave both fans and her conman husband pause.
Kim, on the other hand, can’t yet imagine herself as a bad person. It’s not a stretch to say that she’s always been driven by a misplaced sense of self-righteousness. However, she’s never before been on the wrong side of things, and now that she’s crossed that line, her ends may continue to justify her means — a sentiment attached to the God complex of many villains in popular culture. In Better Call Saul's season 6 trailer, Jimmy lies awake while Kim sleeps like the proverbial baby.
