Watch: Rep. Barbara Lee calls out Education Sec. Betsy DeVos on proposed Special Olympics cuts: 'You zero that out. It's appalling.'
Switched at Birth actress Marlee Maltin slammed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos over her proposal, which would potentially cut funding for the Special Olympics.
DeVos, who has been the United States Secretary of Education since 2017, defended a proposal before a House subcommittee on Tuesday that would cut roughly $7 billion to education programs. This included the Special Olympics, which would face an $18 million federal funding cut through DeVos's plan. DeVos's proposal recommends pulling federal funding program from select education programs that to instead add an additional $60 million to funding charter schools. At least 29 programs would see cuts courtesy of this proposal. This budgetary change was a request DeVos made for the next fiscal year.
Maltin is far from the first to criticize DeVos's education proposal. Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib tweeted Wednesday that DeVos's decision of"robbing" the Special Olympics was"an immoral one." John Roberts, who voices Linda on Bob's Burgers, tweeted Wednesday that DeVos"proves you can have all the money in the world and still be dull, ignorant trash.
