Executive Director Scott Dunwoody tells PennLive how the new federal courthouse in Harrisburg could provide an array of financial opportunities for Bethesda Mission, which is located across the street.

comThe Bethesda Mission homeless shelter in Harrisburg is expecting a boon with the long-awaited opening of the new federal courthouse this spring. That’s because the one thing that the federal courthouse under construction at Sixth Street doesn’t have is parking, and Bethesda Mission in 1934 purchased a property for $10,000 that now is a parking lot that could bring in an estimated $70,000 to $80,000 annually to support its mission to help the homeless.federal courthouse across the street from the men’s shelter at 611 Reily St., replacing the one at Third and Walnut streets. The plan is to rent monthly parking spaces to courthouse employees, said mission Executive Director Scott Dunwoody. The parking lot has 90 spaces, 59 of which will be available to courthouse employees, with another 31 spots for Bethesda employees or visitors. Dunwoody said the lot will officially open April 17. The mission made $100,000 worth of improvements to the lot last fall, including paving it and adding in lighting and fencing, Dunwoody said. Now, Dunwoody said, the mission is just waiting for “commitments” from courthouse employees to begin monthly payments for the new lot. He did not say how much the spaces would cost those who park in them. He noted that employees are still paying for parking near the downtown location and are not in a rush to pay for parking at the new courthouse before it’s open. “We’re a couple months away from it all happening, but we are still encouraging. We have some commitments, but we don’t have all the 59 commitments yet,” Dunwoody said. Although it’s not guaranteed that all 59 federal employee parking spots will be filled, he’s thankful that out of all places, the city decided to relocate the new federal building right across from them. “It’s exciting just to see it all come about,” Dunwoody said. “We could have said no, we’re not going to make these improvements. But we decided to make these improvements and trust God that he’s going to open the doors for employees who decide to park in our lot.”
