Despite fears the hit Broadway show would skip Sydney due to lack of theatre space, & Juliet will arrive at the Lyric Theatre early next year.
In welcome news for the city’s art scene, the Michael Cassel group has confirmedwill move to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in February 2024, after a spectacular sold-out season in Melbourne., the musical imagines a world in which Juliet doesn’t die at the end of the original play but instead goes on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, liberated from the conservative norms of its time.
According to Rob Mills, who plays Shakespeare in the Australian production, the show couldn’t arrive at a better time for audiences. “I would say this is the best thing on stage in the world right now; it is right in the middle of the zeitgeist; I went and saw the movie the other day, and it feels like part of that is this new wave of female empowerment,” said Mills.“Exactly, it’s such a timely and important story, and easily the most exciting production I’ve ever been involved in.”Regarding the production coming to Sydney, Cassel said: “If there were ever a show and a city that were made for each other, it is Sydney andHowever, much like the storyline ofwas nearly a love story gone wrong.
