We tested models from KitchenAid, Breville, Bosch, GE, Wolf, and other brands to find the best stand mixer for every kind of baker—and budget.
When you picture the best stand mixer, you almost certainly, whether you intend to or not, imagine a KitchenAid—specifically the KitchenAid Artisan tilt-head. And for years that’s the one we’ve recommended. But KitchenAid isn’t the only good stand mixer on the market, and with so many new options, we tested 14 models ranging from $40 to $1,000 to find out if it was still the very best stand mixer for most home bakers.
The mixer also needed to be able to knead the dough, which takes about seven minutes on a medium or medium-low speed, depending on the machine. The challah recipe produced a large volume of dough—and also dough that was sticky, which is a good test for each machine’s kneading abilities. The dough becomes less sticky the more you knead it, and it’s challenging for a mixer to handle that quantity of dough, bringing it to the proper level of elasticity.
