The single most intriguing aspect of Paolo Banchero’s game when he was a prospect at Duke was his playmaking ability. For his size and body type, Banchero is an excellent passer, and not just from a standstill either. At 6-foot-10, Paolo can play conventional pick-and-roll, both as the roll man and the passer, which creates a ton of lineup versatility for Jamahl Mosley to play with.Paolo’s assist percentage has jumped from 17.1% as a rookie, already an elite mark, to a whopping 25.3% in Year 2. Per Cleaning the Glass, that puts him in the 96th percentile among all bigs. Part of it is a deepening chemistry with his teammates, but a bigger piece is that Paolo is picking his spots better and leveraging his interior scoring to generate advantageous looks. Banchero is averaging 7.6 assists per game over his last five outings, and would have more if not for a blowout win against the Charlotte Hornets that saw him play just 26 minutes. The Sacramento Kings are solid enough defending man to man, but once a team draws two or breaks the paint and gets the blender going, they fall to pieces more often than not. Paolo should be able to pick them apart in rotation. They don’t match up well with him size for size either, and it’s easy to imagine Sacramento needing to send help with Banchero posting up Harrison Barnes or Keegan Murray on the block over and over. The New York Knicks have been one of several teams gutted by long term injuries this season. On the bright side, they’ve had capable backups step into larger roles to mostly-great results. Perhaps no player has made the most of their newfound opportunity this season than Isaiah Hartenstein, who has been the Knicks’ starting center since Mitchell Robinson injured his ankle in early December. Not only has he filled in defending and rebounding as well or in some cases even better than Robinson, Hartenstein has brought a much-needed element to the Knicks' starting lineup: passing. While the Knicks have had a strong starting unit all season long, they are incredibly short on playmaking, which is compounded by the fact that they also often play two or three players who can’t shoot. Hartenstein’s ability to pass alleviates the frontcourt congestion somewhat, and his role as a distributor in the offense has been steadily growing. He is now a legit offensive hub. He’ll work from the elbows or the high post, and the rest of the Knicks will turn into a whirlwind of off ball cutting and screen setting, eventually freeing someone up for a three or a backdoor look right at the rim. He’s averaging 3.2 assists over his last 10, but even that’s depressed because of a minutes restriction due to Achilles soreness. It seems that injury is mostly in the rearview, and Hartenstein soon topping four or more assists per game is highly likely. He averaged 4.7 per 36 minutes for the Clippers, and when healthy he’s regularly getting that kind of tick. Getting these Isaiah Hartenstein odds at even slightly positive value at this number isn’t going to last, so I’ll take it while I still can. Most of the conversation around Jalen Suggs’ improvement this season has been focused on his 3-point shooting leap. Justifiably so, as that is the swing skill that has allowed him to earn a growing role in the Magic’s rotation. Now that his shooting keeps him on the floor, it’s become undeniable that he’s one of the five best defensive guards in the NBA . The 3-point shooting jump has been dramatic. He shot 32.7% last season, which itself was a big improvement from the 21.4% he shot as a rookie. He’s up to 40.1% from deep this season on a career-high 5.3 attempts per game. But that’s not his only improvement as a scorer. Suggs is shooting 68% at the rim this season, after just 59% in each of his first two seasons. It’s because Suggs has changed his entire approach as a scoring guard, working within the flow of the offense better and taking more high-value shots. He continues to cut long twos from his shot diet, and he’s taking more assisted shots than ever before. The shift from unassisted shots to assisted ones isn’t a move that’s indicative of a star turn, but paired with the massive increase in efficiency that Suggs is seeing everywhere on the court, suggests the next best thing. That is, Suggs is buying into his role completely and thriving in it. The Magic don’t need him to be a high-usage on-ball creator. He’s a play finishing guard on offense and a game-changing player on the defensive end. Suggs’ physical play is problematic for the Kings, who play a lot of defensive minuses on the perimeter and around the rim.
