Your best options for all audio from streaming to vinyl
While streaming is, by a large margin, the most popular way of consuming music today, another format has been ascendant for several years. In roughly the same time frame we looked at above, sales of vinyl records have risen from 11.9 million in 2015 to 41.72 million in 2021.
The upshot is that the demand for recorded music is the highest it has ever been and that the most dedicated listeners are happy getting their favourite sounds in a number of formats. Even Jack White, often viewed as an analog obsessive, has admitted that he does most of his listening via streaming services.
All of which is to say that, if you are in the market for a new home sound system, you will probably want something that will allow you to listen to both digital files and analog formats — to say nothing of other media including movies and video games. With the right adapters, you can probably even find a way to play your favourite reel-to-reel tapes and 8-tracks through today’s systems. Maybe. If you prefer piano rolls, however, you’re probably on your own.
It is worth noting, however, that most home sound systems sold these days don’t actually come with a record player like the one your cool uncle Randy spun his April Wine albums on in the ’70s and ’80s. That means that, in most cases, you will have to buy a turntable separately and connect it to the receiver via an auxiliary cable, RCA connectors, or Bluetooth.
