Coming to Jersey City's White Eagle Hall on Saturday, April 2, is black midi: from left, Morgan Simpson , Cameron Picton , and Geordie Greep . The only certain thing about the much buzzed-about lowercase UK guitar band black midi seems to be that it will always surprise you.
“Forget about trying to reach out with a poppy lead single,” opined Pitchfork. “Black midi don’t seem to be trying to reach anyone at all.” The current stripped-down lineup consists of gruff-voiced singer/guitarist Geordie Greep, bassist and vocalist Cameron Picton, and drummer extraordinaire Morgan Simpson.
The UK band black midi, coming to Jersey City's White Eagle Hall on Saturday, April 2, often uses cartoon representations of its members. The American music press certainly did its part in building black midi’s following, but the summer festival circuit – or at least, what existed of it during the pandemic – is where the group really took off.
Picton balked a bit, though, at the press’ insinuation that much of their breakthrough debut came about through improvisation; that they were, in effect, a prog-punk jam band.
