In Houston, discharged patients remain in an arena to avoid powerless homes. Some 70 miles north, Livingston’s hospital is one of 17 in the state relying on a generator because of Hurricane Beryl power outages.

Houston s NRG Arena was being converted into a temporary medical facility on Wednesday. The facility will have 250 beds for hospital patients who have been discharged and cant return to homes without power in Houston , according to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick., The Texas Tribune’s daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news.

Kidd said hospitals, physicians, and patients will decide who goes to NRG Arena. Any of the regional hospitals can send a patient to the arena. The couple watched their elderly neighbors, one of whom also struggles with her heart, wait hours to receive medical support on Tuesday and decided they didn’t want to risk it. They began searching for a cooling station and learned about the commerce center from a few county employees outside of the Emergency Management office in town.

“Our teams are dedicated to providing care and comfort to our patients and guests during this emergency,” Scott Packard, hospital spokesperson, said. “We’re not set up as a hospital, so there’s only so much we can do,” Miller said. “But if somebody needs to be plugged into oxygen, they’re welcome here.”
