Texas officials urge coastal residents to prepare as the storm headed their way.

A turn to the northwest is expected later on Saturday, with the center of Beryl expected to approach the coast of northeastern Mexico and Texas Sunday and Sunday night.SAN ANTONIO - Beryl exited the Yucatan Friday evening and is now back over open waters in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Over the Yucatan, the system weakened to a tropical storm and as of Friday evening, has sustained winds of 65 mph.

There are rainfall opportunities Saturday but are not associated with Beryl. A weak frontal system will move into the region Saturday, developing a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the area. Sunday attention will shift squarely to Beryl as a likely hurricane will be nearing the Texas coast.By MARTÍN SILVA and JIM VERTUNO Associated Press

The storm's center Friday afternoon was on Mexico's Gulf coast at Progreso, Yucatan, and was 580 miles east-southeast of Brownsville, Texas. It was moving west-northwest at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph , the hurricane center said. "This is a determined storm that is still strong," Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said at a news conference.

Beryl spread destruction in Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados this week. Three people have been reported dead in Grenada, three in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, three in Venezuela and two in Jamaica, officials said.
