Several candidates collected general-election money during the first fundraising quarter, boosting their fundraising totals. But there's a catch: That money won't help them in the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Washington The monster $6.1 million haul that Beto O'Rourke touted in the first day of his presidential campaign included nearly $300,0000 that he can't use for the Democratic nomination fight. Julian Castro, already at the back of the fundraising pack, didn't actually raise a full $1.1 million for the primary. And Amy Klobuchar has more than $572,000 sitting in her campaign's bank account that she only can tap if she wins her party's nod.
A CNN analysis of newly filed campaign-finance reports shows several Democratic candidates raised general-election funds -- available only if they capture the nomination -- alongside the money they can use in the primary battle. Lumping in an extra $300,000 into his first-day haul allowed O'Rourke, for instance, to claim a larger first day windfall than rival Sanders, who reported raising $5.9 million in the first 24 hours of his presidential bid.
