The five-time Olympian was honored along with 34 others, including Alanis Morissette and Pedro Pascal.
At the 2007 World Championships, Lagat became the first athlete to win the 1500 and 5,000 meters. He said of his performance to, “I was able to represent the United States for the first time, and I didn’t come home with just one medal but two. Two gold medals.”
In 2004, Lagat created the Lagat Foundation, which helped provide financial assistance to Kenyan students. According to the, he said, “I try to put my emphasis on helping children … because I truly do think we need to be giving them the best opportunities they can have, so that they too can grow up to be successful in something they love.”
