Wishing a Happy 45th Birthday to Lagat1500 today!

Nothing has dulled Lagat’s competitive edge in the years of his running career. “I still have the same ambition,” he said. “I still feel like I have that drive to train hard.”

What is different about him—and might help explain his longevity in the sport—is his relatively low mileage. He’s always been a once-per-day runner. When he raced on the track, his highest mileage was 60–65 per week. Once before the Gold Coast Marathon, he hit 85 miles. That was only because he looked at his log on a Sunday and realized he was at 82 miles, and then he went out that evening to jog another 3 just to see what 85 miles felt like.

He listens to his body—if he sets out to do a 15-mile run, and he is struggling in the first mile, he’ll stop and call it a day. He tries again the next day. Lagat and his wife, Gladys, have two children—Miika, 13, in eighth grade, who at 5-foot-11 already towers over his dad, and Gigi, 10 in fifth. Since they were in diapers, the kids have been along for Lagat’s racing adventures all over the world. They understand the elite lifestyle and have grown up knowing that if Dad has to travel to a training camp at altitude—as he did before Gold Coast, when he went to Colorado Springs for eight weeks—it’s in pursuit of a goal. When Lagat did not make the U.
