Their decision to jump into the water with a southern right whale made international headlines, but the 'thrilling' experience came at a cost.

Mr Curven's mate, Ant O'Connor, also jumped in, describing his swim with the whale as a "ball-tingling" experience. "We were just bombarded with journalists, and somebody was asking, 'Do you have a photo of it?' and I said, 'Yeah, sure,'" Ms Campbell-Brown said. The pair initially represented themselves in court, but with the help of a prominent QC who took on the case for free, Mr O'Connor's charges were eventually dropped.Southern right whales are a globally threatened species still recovering from being killed for their oil.
"The whales have the behaviour of showing curiosity to people, but we can also be misled by our own perceptions and interpreting what their behaviours mean," he said.
