This article recounts the New Year's Day celebrations in Berkeley in 1925, highlighting the undefeated Cal football team's victory and the contrasting ways people celebrated the holiday.

A century ago, on January 1, 1925, Berkeley hosted a New Year's Day football game. California played the University of Pennsylvania in Memorial Stadium. Both teams were undefeated and an estimated 50,000 spectators attended. On the same day, Stanford was playing Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl. Cal won the game 14-0, making it one of only four college teams in the country to finish the season with an unblemished record. It was the fifth year in a row Cal football went undefeated. Stanford lost.

One unusual visitor for the Berkeley game was a monkey named Dollar that had been acquired in India by a Philadelphia-area resident, Frank Berg. The 20-year-old Berg had been traveling the world for more than two years. He decided in December 1924 to come west to Berkeley for the game. He hitchhiked across the United States with the monkey.Oakland was the big East Bay center of New Year's Eve partying on December 31, 1924. There, the downtown streets were packed with revelers until long after the midnight hour. In contrast, many Berkeleyans who stayed in town celebrated the New Year with watch night services at various churches, and a great number of home gatherings. Watch Night meant midnight services where parishioners stayed up to welcome the coming year. While the expansion of the Berkeley manufacturing district is not spectacular, it is none-the-less certain and steady the Berkeley Daily Gazette noted on January 1, 1925. The article said there is a constantly growing variety to the character of products turned out by the plants within the city
