The appointment in 1923 seems to have been part of an internal shakeup in the municipal government.
Miss Pauline Young, “for several years with the First Berkeley branches of the Mercantile Trust Company of California, an expert accountant, notary and one of the heads of the trust department” had been offered the job of city treasurer by John Edy, Berkeley’s new city manager.
“Edy today set at rest rumors that there were to be other forced resignations,” the Gazette quoted Edy. “ ’I have not requested any other resignation than those which already have been announced. As far as I know, no other city officials are planning to resign.’ ” The event was to be held in the new National Guard Armory on Addison Street. John Burton, a “famous Chicago judge” of kennel shows, was coming to the West Coast for the first time and would serve as judge.
