Berkeley’s Claremont Library branch celebrated its centennial Aug. 31 with an indoor concert, cake and screen printing of commemorative tote bags.
When I first heard of the 100-year anniversary celebration, I was curious since I hadn’t seen anything in the Gazette from 1924 about the library opening in August of that year, so I asked at the library reference desk. They went to the federal War Department and would be used to try to help identify a mysterious arrestee in the Berkeley jail who claimed to have been in the military.In a previous column I reported on the death of eminent professor Alexis Lange, who founded UC Berkeley’s School of Education. A follow-up article in the Gazette about his death reported an eerie coincidence.
