West Berkeley’s massive ornamental iron arch over San Pablo Avenue was dedicated.a century ago this week.A century ago, on Sept. 11, 1924, West Berkeley celebrated a visual milestone when a massive ornamental iron arch over San Pablo Avenue, just north of University Avenue, was dedicated.Berkeley, a Look Back: 1924 purchase solidifies transformation of Bancroft Way
The arch would only stand until 1942, when it was removed. One of the buildings it was adjacent to, though, the West Berkeley Bank on the intersection’s northwest corner, is still there. In September 1924, the city manager was “investigating the advisability of having an annex built” on City Hall. Although an addition was later made to the building’s rear, the lifting of the first floor doesn’t seem to have happened. I recall at some point seeing a plan of the ground floor Police Department showing the south entrance as a main entrance and a north entrance adjacent to working space for police working with victims or criminals who were women or children, so possibly that was the solution. Eventually, of course, the Police Department would move to an entirely new building. On Sept.
