A unique business partnership is enabling Berea-Midpark Middle School students’ knowledge to take flight through an afterschool drone club.

, provided to the Berea Board of Education an overview of his work with the club during the board’s Oct. 28 work session. “We are so excited because it is the first time we have done the program at the middle school level,” Ross said, showing various aerial drone images taken from 200 feet above the Paula Drive campus. “We took the basic curriculum we developed and pared it down so it made sense to middle school students.
“At the end of the day, when we get into weeks five and six, we’re going to actually fly some missions with the students,” Ross said. “We don’t know what those will be … because a lot of them are weather dependent.”“We started with the afterschool program, but our curriculum is designed to level up, taking it from an afterschool club activity to a full STEM process,” Ross explained, noting there will be a projected need for 500,000 drone pilots from 2025 to 2035.
