I've spent the past 25 years writing about the world of home entertainment technology--first at Home Cinema Choice magazine, where I became Deputy Editor, and for the past 20 years on a freelance basis.
Lifestyle projectors designed to deliver big-screen images in regular living spaces rather than dedicated home theater rooms are all the rage these days, resulting in all sorts of weird and sometimes wonderful, sometimes not projector design concepts and feature combinations.
The latest contender in this innovative new projector market is BenQ’s GP520: A model designed, so BenQ claims, for modern ‘Open-Plan Spaces’. The GP520 is a 4K, HDR-capable DLP projector, illuminated by an LED lighting system that’s claimed to be capable of delivering at least 20,000 hours of trouble-free life, and producing a very respectable maximum brightness of 2,600 ANSI Lumens. That’s potentially enough brightness to combat the sort of ambient light that usually finds its way into regular living spaces. The GP520 actually goes much further to accommodate regular living space conditions, though, thanks to its so-called Ambient Adaptive technology. According to BenQ President Peter Huang, this technology “addresses three critical issues: Color distortion from ambient light, optimization to different wall colors, and auto-setup without constant adjustment when the projector is moved into different corners.” In fact, the smart environmental detection systems deployed by the GP520’s Auto Cinema Mode can even adapt the projector’s color performance based on projection distance, while the projector also automatically takes care of focus, 2D keystone and rotation adjustments. On top of this the projector offers other manual adjustment features including obstacle avoidance, screen fit, image repositioning and digital zoom - ensuring you should always be able to get clear images in exactly the right place with exactly the right proportions.Google’s Update Mistake Confirmed As Millions Of Pixel Owners Install Android 15 ‘$500 Billion In Three Weeks’—Tesla Billionaire Elon Musk Issues ‘Crazy’ Fed ‘Bankruptcy’ Warning After Sparking Bitcoin Price Panic The GP520’s omnidirectional design, meanwhile, essentially means it can be set up for front, side, inverted, ceiling-mounted or even upward projection installations. Projectors as bright as the GP520 aren’t just good at punching through potential ambient light, of course; they can also support large image sizes, BenQ claims support for pictures up to 180 inches across for the GP520, in fact. That’s more than big enough to bring out all the benefits of the projector’s 4K resolution, as well as giving you a genuinely cinematic scale of experience that currently no TV can match.Despite its focus on convenience, the GP520 is claimed to be capable of delivering 98% of the Rec 709 SDR color range and 81% of the DCI-P3 HDR color gamut, with color accuracy and precision bolstered by BenQ’s redoubtable CinematicColor tuning and HDR-PRO technology. CinematicColor tuning combines proprietary light source technology with strict waveform analysis to ensure each BenQ projector delivers the most accurate colours it’s capable of, while HDR-PRO works to optimize incoming HDR source images to the projector’s capabilities. The GP520’s HDR support includes the HDR10+ format as well as the more basic HDR10 and HLG systems, meaning that the projector can benefit from the extra scene by scene picture information the HDR10+ format provides. The HDR10+ format is now available with many of the streams available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, as well as a few 4K Blu-ray discs. No lifestyle projector can deliver the true plug and play simplicity it needs if it doesn’t have a built-in sound system. Here again the GP520 goes further than many projector rivals, courtesy of an unusually powerful 2 x 12W built in speaker set up, as well as Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity for adding external speakers and headphones. You don’t even need to find external sources to watch on the GP520, as it features built-in Google TV support with access - including 4K picture quality where available - to all the streaming services Google TV typically carries. If you fancy turning the GP520’s hand to big-screen gaming rather than films, finally, BenQ states that the projector’s two HDMI connections support auto low latency mode switching, while the time the projector takes to render game images can get down to just 17.9ms for 1080p and 4K 60Hz game sources. Nintendo Switch owners might also like to know that the SP520S’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Output so that you can use it to simultaneously display and charge a Nintendo Switch controller.. The GP520 is on sale now in the U.K. and Europe for £1,199/€1,199, while a U.S. launch is expected soon with an expected price of around $1,200.Sony Unveils Two New Premium Home Cinema Laser Projectors With 4K/120 Gaming SupportOur community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
