With recliner seats all the rage at cinemas these days, BenQ has decided to take things a step further by launching a new home entertainment projector that’s designed to let you watch films and TV shows on the ceiling above your bed.
The biggest reason for this is its use of a laser-based lighting system. This enables it to deliver among other things more brightness and relatively slow light source degradation compared with projectors that use lamps to produce their light. In fact, BenQ claims a laser light source life for the GV50 of 30,000 hours.
Despite its ‘lifestyle’ design and relatively casual user scenario, the GV50 should still deliver decent picture quality thanks to its proprietary CinematicColour technology, which helps it deliver a claimed 92% of the Rec 709 colour gamut, as well as a claimed dynamic contrast of 100,000:1, and confirmed support for both the HDR10 and HLG high dynamic range picture formats.
The GV50’s convenience factor is further bolstered by the fact that you don’t have to physically tether it to any source equipment. Its built in Google TV smarts and Wi-Fi support let you stream TV shows and films through a wide range of the world’s leading streaming services, including Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video. Or you can stream video to the projector from other wireless devices thanks to its Google Cast support.
