Rudisill scored the game-winning goal for the Warriors while Bernier cemented a shutout over the Greyhounds on Thursday.
SHIPPENSBURG — Seven days ago, Shippensburg ’s new athletic turf stadium was christened by Warren Jones’ 300th career win as the Greyhounds’ coach in their home opener. The Warriors outlasted their Mid-Penn Conference Colonial foes 1-0 to remain unbeaten, handing the Greyhounds their first loss in the process.
It feels like a landmark win for Gettysburg , capturing a close one against not just a fellow divisional heavyweight. The two were among the top four seeds in District 3 Class 3A last year — Gettysburg at No. 2 and Shippensburg at No. 4. Shippensburg had gone on to match its deepest playoff run in program history. Gettysburg, meanwhile, bowed out in the first run to Bishop McDevitt in penalty kicks. Thursday offered a snapshot of what this October might look like instead. “All of our guys are very hungry and want to get better and win these games, go back into that playoff ride and win and just see how far it goes,” Warriors goalkeeper Jake Bernier said.Deadlocked through 31 minutes of play, it was senior defensive midfielder Bennett Rudisill who pocketed the winning goal. During a misplay at the net, Rudisill came in from the far side and cleaned up a loose ball with his left foot, rippling the back of the net for what ultimately became a permanent lead. “I got the foul and just dropped back there a little bit, saw his eyes going to play this way, so I just stepped up to the ball and kind of shot it,” Rudisill said, noting Shippensburg netminder Callum Burnett’s positioning in the box. Bernier and Burnett each recorded six saves in a game where Gettysburg held a slim advantage in shots taken, 11-10. On top of the Warriors’ defense in the run of play, the Warriors also defended seven corner kick opportunities on the day, only seizing two corners themselves. Nick Aumen, Dutch Spangler, Gustavo Carbajal-Hinojosa, Gio Hernandez and Josh Moyer all highlighted that bulwark effort on defense between set pieces and the run of play in front of Bernier. “Our center backs were awesome. Our outside backs don’t get enough love, so I should mention them, too,” Gettysburg coach Ian Hancock said. “Nick and Jake are really good communicators, so I would say our back line has gotten a little better with each game.”With one minute left in regulation, the Greyhounds showed some bite. Lining up for a corner kick, they saw one last ball aired out over the scrum as seconds ticked off the clock. Shippensburg senior Austin Alosi met the ball on its third bounce, winding back his right foot to deliver a line drive on goal. It was diverted by junior back Lucas Delacruz. Gettysburg was able to withstand one more push on that same possession before clearing out the ball and shaving off the last several seconds of game time. “All of the boys were just well in,” Bernier said of Gettysburg’s final stand in the set piece. “They were making tackles that honestly they probably shouldn’t have, but it worked out in our favor. We kept our heads level and didn’t take any big risks. I think defense just did a great job today.”Junior forward Gage Sauserman was recognized before the game for becoming just the sixth player in Shippensburg history to reach 100 career points, doing so with a goal in a 3-2 win at Waynesboro. Heading to center field with a brown poster and multi-colored wording coronating the man of the hour, it was a hero’s welcome back for Sauserman, who played a big hand in the Greyhounds not only matching their deepest postseason run to the District 3 quarterfinals, but helping them raise their single-season scoring record from 81 to 84 goals. “Gage as a sophomore, I really saw potential in him then, and I really thought he was going to have a breakout season,” Jones said. “I was constantly on him to use both feet when he was a sophomore, and I even threatened to play him on defense and take him away from being a striker. I didn’t really plan to do that, but I was trying to make that impression.” Sauserman wasn’t suited up on Thursday. According to Warren, he sustained a minor injury and was sidelined out of caution, saying he should be ready to go for Shippensburg’s next game against James Buchanan on Monday. “He’ll be back tomorrow, he’ll be back next week. Nothing we’re concerned with,” Jones said. “He felt good to go today, but he’d seen the doctor, and the doctor said he wanted him to wait one day. We were just following protocol, and he said, ‘Man, I’m ready to go, Coach.’” Thanks for visiting PennLive. Quality local journalism has never been more important. We need your support.
