Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase missed practice for the first time this training camp amid a contract hold-in.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was not present at practice on Tuesday as he seeks a contract extension, per ESPN's Ben Baby. The missed practice marks the first time that Chase has altogether been absent during training camp practice this year, as he has previously held in through camp.

Chase also did not practice during the team's voluntary offseason workouts or mandatory minicamp, except for walkthroughs. This was the Bengals' final home practice before they depart for their second preseason game, against the Chicago Bears. The incoming fourth-year receiver currently has two years left on his current contract.Bengals owner Mike Brown seemed to suggest in July that it wasn't likely the Bengals would sign Chase to an extension this year.'It's not so likely that this is the good time to negotiate,' Brown said in July, via Ben Baby of ESPN. 'The offseason is a better time for that and we're going to try to keep focused on the football part. I'm not going to rule anything out, but I will tell you that the die has probably been cast.'The Bengals could very well follow the lead of the Minnesota Vikings, who waited until after their receiver's fourth season to sign him to a large contract extension. The Vikings made Jefferson the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL in June, signing Chase's former LSU teammate to a four-year, $140 million deal.Since Jefferson is part of the 2020 NFL Draft class and Chase was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, following that timeline would mean Chase would not get an extension until next season. While the Vikings waited until after Jefferson's fourth season, plenty of other teams have not done the same. The Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, and Philadelphia Eagles all drafted receivers in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and have signed those receivers to extensions this offseason. The Dolphins signed No. 6 overall pick Jaylen Waddle to a three-year, $84.75 million deal, making Waddle the fifth-highest-paid receiver on a per-year basis. The Eagles signed No. 10 overall pick DeVonta Smith to a three-year, $75 million extension, and the Ravens signed Rashod Bateman to a three-year, $15 million contract. The difference of course is that those three receivers all signed three-year deals, while a receiver of Chase's caliber would typically sign a four- or five-year deal that would make him at least a top-three highest-paid receiver.Chase has already established himself as one of the NFL's best receivers over just three seasons. The LSU product got off to a hot start in the NFL, catching 84 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns as the Bengals went to the Super Bowl and Chase was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. While Chase has dealt with injuries the last two seasons, he still has put together back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2022 and 2023, solidifying his case for a top contract at some point over the next year.
