When BDT answered its last call in Philadelphia last week, the city lost an important player in the effort to make public benefits accessible. But it shouldn't have had to exist in the first place.
But the truth is, the nonprofit never should have had to exist in the first place. Althoughuntil Aug. 24, the call center closed last week, and while its work is likely to be picked up by others, its closure marks an opportunity to reexamine — and improve — the benefits system.in public benefits — that can help people afford food, utilities, health care, housing, childcare, and more — go unclaimed by eligible Philadelphians each year.
All of these issues share a common cause: the current benefits system was designed to prevent waste and fraud, not for efficiency, ease of use, or to preserve the dignity of those who access it.
