A red carpet image of Benedict Cumberbatch.
When The Roses opened in August, things didn’t go according to plan. Critics admired its sharpness, early buzz painted it as awards-bait, and its pedigree was impossible to ignore — Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, writer Tony McNamara , and director Jay Roach .
Yet the dark divorce comedy was overshadowed by franchise fare, finishing its theatrical run with disappointing numbers — earning $52 million off a $30 million budget — and a narrative that framed it as a flop. Fast-forward a few months, and everything has changed. The Roses has quietly exploded on Hulu, cracking the service’s Top 5 most-streamed movies and sparking a new wave of word-of-mouth enthusiasm from viewers who either missed it in theaters or simply didn’t realize what it was. Just like The Greatest Showman, Game Night, or Contagion, it’s become the latest entry in the “good movie rescued by streaming” club — only this time with two masterclass performers melting down in glorious fashion. Cumberbatch and Colman play Theo and Ivy Rose, a power couple whose seemingly perfect family life begins fracturing as Ivy ascends professionally just as Theo’s career deteriorates. Then the war between the two begins as jealousy and bitterness take hold. Is 'The Roses' Worth Seeing? Collider's Ross Bonaime reviewed the movie for the site, hailing the performances but opining that the movie could have used some sharper edges in its comedy. However, he also felt that the performances of Colman and Cumberbatch were outstanding, adding that"it’s fantastic to see Colman go back to her comedic origins here, which won her an Oscar for The Favourite". Bonaime added that"it’s great to see Cumberbatch also let loose, as it’s been a rare occurrence to see him do comedy", before summarizing: "Sure, it’s enjoyable here and there, and it’s hard not to have a good time watching Colman and Cumberbatch attacking each other. However, it's difficult to even imagine a big theatrical comedy going as murky as The War of the Roses was able to in the late 1980s. The Roses ties itself up in a nice bow and doesn’t want to get its hands too dirty, which ultimately holds this back from being something truly fantastic. As it stands, The Roses has its charms, but it could’ve used a few more thorns." 6 10 The Roses Like Comedy Drama Release Date August 29, 2025 Director Jay Roach Writers Warren Adler, Tony McNamara Producers Jay Roach, Michelle Graham, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver Cast See All
