Actor Benedict Cumberbatch expresses regret over playing a non-binary character in 'Zoolander 2', acknowledging the harmful and offensive portrayal and stating he would not make the same choice today.
Actor Benedict Cumberbatch admitted that he has had to apologize numerous times for his portrayal of a non-binary character in the 2016 film ' Zoolander 2 '. Cumberbatch, renowned for his roles as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series, expressed regret over playing the character named 'All', a non-binary fashion model.
In the film, 'All' is depicted with shaved eyebrows and an androgynous appearance, prompting awkward and insensitive questioning from the main characters played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. These moments were widely criticized by liberal commentators for their transphobic and offensive portrayal of non-binary individuals. Cumberbatch acknowledged the backlash in an interview with Variety, stating, 'I've had to apologize for that quite a lot. It's a difficult one to talk about. I love that group of people and it was the chance to sort of be part of something that the first time around was iconic and I was a huge fan of. But it got complicated and it got misunderstood and I upset people. I respect that, so I probably wouldn’t do that again now.' He also recognized that in today's climate, the role would be best played by a trans actor. The controversy surrounding 'Zoolander 2' highlighted the importance of sensitive and accurate representation of marginalized communities in film
