One in 35 Australian women of reproductive age use oral retinoids. But researchers fear too few are warned of the dangers if they fall pregnant.
One in 35 Australian women of reproductive age use oral retinoids to clear up acne. But researchers fear the treatment is exacting a hidden and dreadful toll.
“Women are taking oral retinoid treatment for their acne but are having unintended pregnancies,” said senior author Dr Antonia Shand, who also works as an obstetrician. “Because oral retinoids cause problems for unborn babies such as fetal abnormalities including face, heart, ear and brain problems, women are having terminations or miscarriages.”
Lim said he’d never treated a patient who had fallen pregnant while on oral retinoids but it was known to happen. It was a shock: while the then 19-year-old had not been using contraception, she had no plans to start a family with her partner. While her dermatologist had told her that she should use contraception when he prescribed her oral retinoids, Rebecca said he did not explain why.
Dr Debra Kennedy, the director of MotherSafe, receives at least 20 calls a year from distressed women who have fallen pregnant while taking oral retinoids.Kennedy, a co-author of the paper, decided to research the issue after being contacted by a teenager who fell pregnant while taking oral retinoids.
