Former France No. 8 Abdelatif Benazzi, former Australia flanker Brett Robinson and former Italy lock Andrea Rinaldo are the three candidates to succeed Bill Beaumont, who is stepping down after eight years in the role at World Rugby.The winning ticket needs to secure a majority of the 52 votes on the World Rugby Council.
Widely consider the outsider in the contest, Rinaldo — who retired from rugby at age 24 because of a knee injury — is the oldest of the candidates at 70 and the first Italian to go for the role as chairman. He has held a leadership role in rugby thanks to his 20 years on the executive committee of European Professional Club Rugby, which is responsible for Europe’s two main cup competitions, and positions in the Italian federation.
