Ben Stiller has spoken candidly about his and wife Christine Taylor's decision to separate for several years in 2017. He explained to The New York Times that the separation was a necessary step to understand their relationship better.
Ben Stiller recently opened up about his and his wife Christine Taylor's decision to separate for a few years in 2017. During an interview with The New York Times, the 59-year-old actor explained that the separation was a chance to understand their relationship better. Stiller shared, 'When we separated, it was just having space to see what our relationship was, what my life felt like when we weren’t in that relationship, how much I loved our family unit.
' He emphasized that although their separation lasted 'three or four years,' they remained connected throughout. Stiller admitted, 'In my mind, I never didn’t want us to be together.' He attributed their reconciliation to the time they spent together during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'COVID put us all together in the same house,' Stiller explained. 'It was almost a year of living in the same house before we were actually together. But I’m so grateful for it, and I think not that many people do come back together when they separate.'He continued, 'There’s nothing like that when you come back. You have so much more appreciation for what you have, because we know we could not have it.' The couple met in 1999 when Taylor auditioned for a show Stiller was directing and made their red carpet debut later that year. They married in 2000 and welcomed their first child in 2002 and their son in 2005. After 17 years of marriage, Stiller and Taylor announced their separation in 2017 through a joint statement, prioritizing their children and their friendship. Stiller and Taylor were spotted together several times during their separation, notably at the 2019 Emmy Awards, where Taylor supported Stiller. Stiller confirmed their reconciliation in a 2022 interview with Esquire, emphasizing the importance of accepting their differences. He explained that recognizing their individuality allowed them to 'really appreciate someone more because you're not trying to get them to change for you.' Taylor echoed these sentiments in a 2023 interview with 'The Drew Barrymore Show,' stating that they both realized they had 'started to grow in different directions' and needed time to understand that. The pandemic provided an opportunity for them to have honest conversations without distractions, leading to a deeper understanding and appreciation for their relationship
