Ben Simmons' tenure with the Brooklyn Nets has concluded. After a turbulent period marked by injuries and underwhelming performance, the team waived Simmons following a buyout agreement. The former No. 1 overall pick is expected to join the Los Angeles Clippers for the remainder of the season.

Ben Simmons' time with the Brooklyn Nets has officially come to an end. The team waived Simmons on Saturday after reaching a buyout agreement, marking the final departure from a period of building around All-Star players that ultimately proved unsuccessful. Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft, was absent for the Nets' victory over the Miami Heat on Friday night as both sides finalized the deal.

Head Coach Jordi Fernandez expressed admiration for Simmons' resilience in overcoming a string of injuries that hampered his effectiveness in Brooklyn. 'I know that not playing for a season and then limited games another season and now fighting his way back, playing I think it was a little over 20 minutes or mid-20s,' Fernandez said, in his first season with the Nets. 'So that’s pretty good. Really good to see that after going through a surgery, now being back playing basketball.' However, Simmons' contributions fell far short of the Nets' expectations when they acquired him in a trade for James Harden at the 2022 trade deadline. He was unable to take the court alongside Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving that season due to a back injury sustained while attempting to regain his form after sitting out the first half of the season in Philadelphia. The injury issues, primarily lower back nerve damage, persisted, limiting Simmons' availability. He managed to play through half of the 2022-23 season, during which both Durant and Irving were traded, and appeared in only 15 games the previous year. This season, Simmons suited up for 33 of the Nets' 52 games, starting 24, and averaged 6.2 points and 6.9 assists. With a $40 million salary for the current season and impending free agency afterward, Simmons is reportedly set to join the Los Angeles Clippers for the remainder of the season. Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank, while acknowledging potential additional moves before Saturday night's game against the Utah Jazz, refrained from mentioning Simmons, stating that he hadn't cleared waivers. 'We’ve been fortunate in the buyout market. You look at Nico (Batum), Reggie Jackson and Russ (Russell Westbrook), those guys had a huge impact,' Frank said. 'We’re fortunate that we’ve always been a destination for buyout guys. Guys love playing for (coach Tyronn Lue), they’ve fallen in love with the franchise. So we’ll look at the buyout market and see how we can address some additional needs that we have.
