Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield has stepped down from the iconic ice cream brand after 47 years.
Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield has stepped down from the iconic ice cream brand after 47 years, citing a disagreement with parent company Unilever. "It's profoundly disappointing to conclude that that independence, the very basis of our sale to Unilever, is gone," Greenfield said in a statement on X, referring to Ben & Jerry's independence to pursue their values.
He says it was guaranteed when Unilever bought the company. Greenfield and his partner, Ben Cohen, sold their company to Unilever 25 years ago with the understanding that they would retain the autonomy to pursue their values. "This isn't because I've lost my love for the people at Ben & Jerry's. Quite the opposite," Greenfield said. For two decades, Greenfield and Cohen continued to advocate for peace, justice, and human rights. However, Greenfield said that this autonomy began to erode recently. Last week, he and Cohen requested that Unilever spin off their former company to allow it to operate independently. Unilever declined the request and denied allegations that it is silencing the co-founders.The caption linked
