Crump, families call for DOJ investigation into Harris County Jail amid high death toll
. and Gary Smith, a nephew and uncle who died in separate incidents at the jail in the same month. Gary Smith, 59, was found unconscious and had numerous medical conditions, the sheriff's office said. Kevin Smith Jr., 23, died after suffering"a medical emergency."
Paul Grinke, a Dallas-area lawyer who works with Crump, said preliminary independent autopsy results, along with visible evidence on their bodies, led the attorneys to have"credible reason to believe" that Smith Jr. and Pillow were both beaten, and that Pillow died of compression asphyxiation. Jason Spencer, chief of staff for Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, said the sheriff's office"is glad to have any other agency review these deaths or any others that they think warrant additional inquiry." He said the sheriff has already requested that the FBI investigate Pillow's death along with that of Jaquaree Simmons, who was beaten to death by guards in 2021.
