Fortson – who entered active duty in 2019 – was stationed at Hurlburt Field. He was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron. He was shot and killed by an Okaloosa County deputy on May 3 at his apartment on Racetrack Road in Fort Walton Beach.“For whatever reason, they thought he was a bad guy, but he was a good guy. He was a great guy. He was an exceptional guy,” Crump said during the conference. “They took a patriot from us.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said a deputy acted in self-defense that afternoon after hearing sounds of a disturbance inside Fortson's apartment.All of us at the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office are saddened about the fatal officer involved shooting over the weekend. Late Friday afternoon, our deputy responded to a call of a disturbance in progress where he encountered an armed man. The deputy shot the man, who later succumbed to his injuries.
