"The last show that we played was in February of 2020, and then everybody knows what happened in March," Omar says in a phone interview from New York where she now works as a flight attendant."Everything about the way we left things, it was very unexpected."Abraham Alexander is the state's latest rising music star.
It was in one of those conversations that the idea was floated of getting together for a concert."And the conversation became just kind of 'OK, well, yeah'," Omar recalls. "First it was like, 'Why not?' Then it was like, 'Yeah, let's try it out.' And before we knew it, we were playing a show."The Tontons first came to public attention in the late aughts with the"Sea and Stars" EP in 2008 followed by a self-titled album in 2009.
The comparisons often irked Omar."The amount of times that I got compared to Macy Gray, not because of my voice, but because of my hair, it's just stuff like that," she continues."They weren't looking for a sound, they were looking for an aesthetic. And I don't know that we necessarily fit in with that aesthetic."
