Ending the hazing of college students could become a law throughout the nation if President Joe Biden signs new legislation that just passed through Congress.
Sam Martinez, left, pictured with a family member, died at the age of 19 while he was a freshman at Washington State University.
This week the U.S. Senate pushed through the Stop Campus Hazing Act after the House of Representatives passed it in September. The bill requires colleges and universities to publish their hazing prevention policies and to report hazing incidents that occur. These reports would then be posted on the school’s website with the names of organizations that have violated the policies.
. Sam’s Law expanded the definition of hazing and required colleges to provide education and training about hazing awareness. It also required schools to report violations by student groups. The reporting requirements in the Stop Campus Hazing Act would be compiled into a database that parents and students could review when making decisions about what student organizations to join.
